In the Celtic tradition, family is praised and honored, and many open gatherings welcome children. Once they reach a certain age they are expected to behave and show respect to the proceedings and rites. It's an important part of a child's education in the traditional sense. Keltic tradition not only honors Ancestor's, but our descendants (the children). They are invited and welcomed to share their place within our society, that they may find pride in their heritage. They obtain self-certainty and by a connection with the land.
The name Celt originated with the ancient Greeks, who called the barbarian peoples of central Europe Keltoi. Rather that being a broad cultural genetic 'race,' the Celts were a broad cultural-linguistic group. The area where they lived became a constantly changing collection of tribal 'nations.' The Celts were never an 'empire' ruled by one government.
The Feast of Lughnasadh falls on the cross-quarter day between the summer solstice and the autumn equinox. The festival was, according to legend, instituted by the god Lugh on the occasion of his foster-mother Tailtiu's death as a funeral feast. It is clear, however, that the feast originated as a commemoration of Lugh's slaying of the giant Balor, and the prizing of agricultural secrets from the dark god Bres. This victory over the Fomorians marked the beginning of the rule of the Tuatha D Danann.
These traditions in particular remained strong through Christian times. Predictably, the church discovered yet another festival to commemorate, which just happened to fall at this time - the Lammas festival. Lammas also celebrated the harvest, and it was celebrated in much the same way, with games and contests and open-air markets. The name Lammas is believed to be derived from "loaf-mass," but this explanation is not universally accepted.
These principles, practices, and ideas inspire and inform many ideologies today, and the nature of interpersonal matters described above-such as equality and mutual respect among women and men, a commitment to peace and justice, enduring loyalty to family and friends, and spiritual openness-are fine principles to apply in this day and age as well, especially when forming the foundation of a loving, lasting relationship.
