Used Forklift Buying Guide

By Justin Nielsen

A used forklift can be the perfect solution to your needs if you need a forklift to boost productivity but are on a limited budget. As long as you buy it from a reputable source and get the right lift truck for your needs, it will last for many years and serve you well.

You can look for one close to home by checking out the newspapers and asking other industrial business owners if they know if any are available. There's a catch to this method, though. When you buy from a private seller, you can't be confident in the machine you're buying and it will not be backed up by a warranty.

Looking for your used forklift online is the other way to find one. It's just a matter of googling the words and you will have more options than you know what to do with. The catch is finding one you can trust. If buying from a private party in your own neighborhood can be a problem, the problem is compounded when you buy from someone who lives and works in another city or state.

The most reliable way to purchase a used forklift is to get it from a dealer who is authorized to sell new and reconditioned models by the manufacturer. Look for a large company that sells warehouse supplies and other heavy duty equipment.

Before you decide who to buy from, check out a few websites. Especially check the "About" pages and read about the company. If the company has been in business a long time, you can probably count on its being a reputable company. Double check with the Better Business Bureau or another independent organization, just to be sure.

Now it's time to start shopping for your used forklift. If it is the first one you have ever purchased, you may be surprised by how many different brands, models and styles are available. Some are designed for lighter duties in limited space. Others have an enormous lifting capacity. Then there are lifts designed for special purposes.

Determine exactly what you need to use yours for. Think about both everyday use and extraordinary use. Your used forklift will serve you better if you get one that can handle work beyond the capacity of your everyday needs. If you think you will never be lifting anything over 1500lbs, it's an easy decision, because 2000 lbs is about the lower lifting limit of any forklift. However, if you think you may need to occasionally lift more, get a bigger forklift.

Finally, see what checks the dealer does before he releases a pre-owned forklift onto the market. Also make sure they use factory trained professionals and offer a warranty. If the company passes all of these tests, you can buy your used forklift from them with confidence.
