What I Know About Purchasing At Online Auctions

By Stuart J. Everts

Boats at auction consist primarily of boats from bank repossessions i.e. bank repo boats or motivated / distressed owners, not to mention dealer liquidations. Boats liquidated by Government agencies or Police auctions do occur but I've found not that often.

Whoever takes a risk and seriously gets in on these 'must sale' sales events either online or offline (and they come and go all the time) will usually have opportunity to walk away with a substantially affordable asset. If you need help finding these boat auction houses I can tell you from experience that you can try and keep up with all the sales events on your own.

Before jumping into any type of high ticket auction where you're buying equipment, machinery, vehicles, and especially boats or marine equipment you'll want to get a professional survey or inspection performed especially if you're not a DIY type. Some sales will routinely offer a pre-bid inspection of a few days to anytime which is necessary for those who are shopping for a boat that's in need of a few repairs.

Once you start comparing boats at auction you'll find that many boat repos will have minimal if any cosmetic damage to the interior or hull and just need an inspired. However,But many buyers just can't look past the grit and grime. Yes it is true if a boat looks like trash it probably is...but not always. A survey and sea trial will give you the real picture.

The reality is that even though the US economy is starting to look up, the surplus of repossessed boats for sale along with other bank collateral continues. Savvy boat buyers who are in the market to buy a new or used boat still have opportunity to save at least an average of 30% on about any type of boat should the elect to purchase through a local repo boats auction.
